Ravichandran Ashwin has heaped unique praise on his former Indian teammate and all-time batting great Sachin Tendulkar. Mere days prior to India’s World Cup 2023 crusade, the legendary spinner took to his YouTube channel and expressed his views on the former cricketer.

Speaking with renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle, Ashwin claimed that Tendulkar was more than just a poster boy of Indian cricket.

‘Sachin Tendulkar was not just a hope…’ says Ashwin

Sachin Tendulkar roared into Indian cricket in 1989 at the tender age of 16. Bearing the weight of expectations from a cricket-crazy nation for the subsequent 24 years, the legendary batsman ended up claiming every possible major batting record and went on to lift the World Cup title in 2011 in front of his home crowd.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who was part of the 2011 World Cup line-up, recently said that Tendulkar’s larger-than-life persona makes him bigger than the sport itself. The star all-rounder said:

“Sachin Tendulkar was not just a poster boy. He was not just a hope. But he was everything. Not just in cricket. For young Indian coming up in life, he was everything. Sachin Tendulkar was something else. He was not just a cricketer.”

Sachin Tendulkar announced his retirement from international cricket in 2013 with a Test match in Mumbai. Some of his most prominent batting records continue to remain his overall run-tally in Tests and ODIs, as well as his record of 100 international centuries across all formats.

Ashwin, who lifted the 2011 World Cup with Sachin Tendulkar, is now slated to represent Team India at the 2023 edition at home. The cricketer was included in the team’s 15-player line-up earlier this week, as he will be covering for injured Axar Patel in the side.
