Ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin left the cricket world in shock when he announced his retirement from international cricket on the final day of the third Test against Australia in Brisbane. Just two days later, Ashwin took to social media to express gratitude for the overwhelming support from teammates, fans, and legends of the game.
On Wednesday, Ashwin, 37, made the unexpected announcement during a post-match press conference alongside skipper Rohit Sharma. “I won’t take too much of your time. Today will be the last day for me as an India cricketer,” he said, before exiting the room without taking any questions.
Social media was flooded with heartfelt messages for the legendary off-spinner. Several cricketing icons, including Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev, personally reached out to Ashwin to commend him on his stellar career. Both cricket legends reportedly called him as soon as he returned to his hometown, Chennai.
On Friday morning, Ashwin shared a screenshot of his call logs on social media. Alongside the image, he wrote:
“If someone told me 25 years ago that I would have a smartphone and the call log on the last day of my career as an Indian cricketer would look like this ☺️☺️, I would have had a heart attack then only. Thanks @sachin_rt and @therealkapildev paaji🙏🙏 #blessed”
R Ashwin's Illustrious Career
Ashwin’s legacy will be remembered as one of the finest bowlers in cricketing history, trailing only Anil Kumble’s incredible 953 scalps for India across all formats. Over a 14.5-year career, Ashwin played 287 matches for India, taking 765 wickets across formats, including 537 in Tests—second only to Anil Kumble.
