Mumbai Indians had a rough start to their IPL 2025 campaign, falling flat in their opening clash against Chennai Super Kings. But as the five-time champs gear up for their next big face-off, this time against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, Rohit Sharma has spoken up and he isn’t one to mince words.

Rohit Sharma Makes His Intentions Clear Despite Role Shift

The former skipper, now playing under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, addressed the elephant in the room: his changing role and gave fans a dose of hope ahead of Saturday’s match at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

“Roles have changed, but the mindset is the same,”  Rohit Sharma said, throwing it back to the good old MI way of never giving up even when the chips are down.

“I want to go out there and win trophies, that is what MI is known for. We've won the IPL from such situations no one believed us to do.”

That’s the Hitman mindset and it’s clear he’s not just here to make up the numbers. Even if he isn’t wearing the captain’s armband anymore, the hunger in his eyes hasn’t faded one bit.

Tough Opening Game For MI

Mumbai’s campaign got off on the wrong foot. Without Hardik (who was serving a one-match ban), Suryakumar Yadav led the side, but MI’s batters didn’t turn up.

Rohit Sharma couldn’t trouble the scorers, while Ryan Rickelton (13) and Will Jacks (11) didn’t offer much either. Tilak Varma’s 31 and SKY’s 29 were the only flickers of resistance as MI limped to 155/9 against CSK.

In reply, Chennai chased the total down in 19.1 overs with ease. The silver lining? Debutant Vignesh Puthur impressed big time, grabbing 3/32. Chahar and Jacks chipped in with one wicket each but there just wasn’t enough on the board to defend.

Clash With Titans Up Next

With Hardik back and the focus firmly on MI, Saturday’s clash against Gujarat Titans is make-or-break early in the season. Both teams are coming off opening-game losses, and the heat will be on.

Rohit knows this drill all too well. He’s led MI out of deeper holes before. And while he may not be the captain this time, his presence in the dressing room is still worth its weight in gold.
