Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes that if Rohit Sharma guides team India to a Test series win in South Africa, he will be at the very top of the annals of Indian cricket.

Team India is currently on a tour of South Africa, set to participate in a three-match T20I series, followed by a three-match ODI series. The tour will conclude with a two-match Test series. Unfortunately, the first T20I was abandoned due to the rain.

Notably, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, among the senior players, are sitting out the white-ball series against South Africa and are slated to make their return for the upcoming two-match Test series.

In a Star Sports conversation, Pathan was asked about Rohit Sharma's mental preparation for the South African challenge as a batter. Here's what the cricketer-turned-commentator said:

"If Rohit Sharma is able to conquer South Africa, his name will be kept top-most in India's cricket history as captain and player because he only has the key to wins in both these matches."

Irfan Pathan believes if Sharma gets going, then he will make the job of other Indian batters easy in the testing conditions of South Africa.

"He is both an opener and a captain. If you play out the new ball, your other batters will get the chance to shine. That's why you should remove the shine from the new ball."

Rohit Sharma has scored 678 runs at an average of 42.37 in nine Tests against South Africa. However, he has accumulated just 123 runs at a poor average of 15.37 in four Tests in South Africa and will look to improve his numbers on this tour.
