Indian cricket embarks on a transformative phase as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket within a week, stepping away ahead of the five-match series against England in June. Kohli, who amassed 9,230 runs in 123 Tests, announced his decision days after Rohit exited the format.

While Rohit and Kohli remain committed to ODIs, their future in the 50-over format has sparked debate. Fuelling the fire, Sunil Gavaskar, the Indian cricketing legend, has added to the speculations with his recent comments.

Gavaskar's Stunning Claim About Rohit and Kohli!

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar weighed in on the speculation and buzz surrounding the stay of the two cricket greats till the 2027 World Cup.

“They have been massive performers...Once again, the selection panel will likely be considering the 2027 World Cup. They will assess whether these players can still be part of the squad for that tournament. The question will be, ‘Can they continue offering the kind of value they have been providing?’ That will guide the selectors’ thinking. If the panel feels the answer is yes, then both players will be included,” Gavaskar added.

Candid about their prospects, Gavaskar further added that Ro-Ko might not stay long to see India lift the 2027 World Cup.

“No, I don’t think they will be playing. I am being very honest. But, who knows, in the next year or so, if they strike a rich vein of form, and if they keep scoring hundreds and hundreds, even God can’t drop them,” Gavaskar added.

While acknowledging their legacy, he emphasised the selectors’ focus on building toward 2027, leaving the door ajar for extraordinary performances to defy expectations.

The duo recently played pivotal roles in India’s Champions Trophy triumph, with Kohli anchoring the semi-final against Australia and Rohit’s explosive 76 against New Zealand earning him Player-of-the-Match. Their performances underlined their enduring value, yet questions loom over their longevity.
