Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir (BCCI)
The Indian team might have got their breath back after what happened at The Gabba on Wednesday. However, claims revolving around a possible discord between Indian captain Rohit Sharma and head-coach Gautam Gambhir have emerged suggesting that the two are not on the same page in this transition period.
India, who won the Perth Test match under the leadership of Jasprit Bumrah; have failed to make it big in the last two Test matches i.e. under the guidance of Rohit Sharma. India first lost in Adelaide's Pink-Ball Test and then narrowly escaped from the jaws of death as Akash Deep and Bumrah helped India avoid a follow-on at the end of Day 4. Ever since then, Rohit, his captaincy and his performance have all come under scrutiny.
Rohit Sharma's Eyebrow Raising Stats At No.6
The 37-year-old opener, who sacrificed his spot for KL Rahul, is currently batting at No. 6 where his stats have been far from impressive. In the last three innings, the Indian captain has managed to score only 19 runs at an average 6.33.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, ex-Pakistan player, Basit Ali has lashed out and made bizarre claims indicating that the reason for India's out-of-touch performance is because Rohit-Gambhir are not in-sync. He said:
"Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir are not on the same page, be it the one-day tournament in Sri Lanka; Bangladesh, which was a weak series; or the New Zealand series after that. In the second and third (Tests), they (Rohit and Gambhir) are not on the same page, like Rahul Dravid was. He and Rohit were not on the same page"
Basit Ali Highlights India's 'Weak-link'
Basit also pointed out India’s over-reliance on Jasprit Bumrah and the absence of quality left-arm pace bowlers as key factors behind the team’s difficulties in countering Travis Head's aggressive onslaught.
"Was the decision to bowl first right? I think it was not. The Indian team is only dependent on Bumrah. The rest of the bowlers are not performing like they should. If I say it's Bumrah vs Australia, that will be right. Similarly, it's Travis Head vs India...Neither Rohit, nor (bowling coach) Morne Morkel and (chief coach) Gautam Gambhir are able to solve this problem.
India don't have a left-arm fast bowler in their squad. That's a weak link. We have seen Mir Hamza or Shaheen Shah Afridi accounting for Head because that's a different angle. That's why, if you see, Bumrah bowls round the wicket to Head," Basit further pointed out.
Meanwhile, India will now lock horns with Australia in the fourth Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy from 26 December onwards.
