The political relations between India and Pakistan recently hit a new low after a gruesome Pahalgam terror attack. The T20 leagues of both countries were postponed due to the cross-border attacks that followed, and it has further decreased the possibility of cordial cricket relations between the two countries.
Over the last decade or so, India and Pakistan have played each other only in white-ball ICC tournaments and have not played Test cricket since December 2007. There have been some suggestions that the two countries should play Test cricket at a neutral venue, but no development has been made in that direction.
Ravi Shastri Explains Political Importance In India-Pakistan Cricket Relations
Now, in a discussion on Sky Sports, Michael Atherton asked Ravi Shastri about the possibility of an India-Pakistan Test series in future and stated that it would be a big boost for the format.
Ravi Shastri, in reply, agreed that it would be a boost to Test cricket but made it clear that it all depends on the political relations between the two sides. He added that the decision has nothing to do with BCCI or ICC, and it all depends on what politicians think.
Thus, the renowned Indian commentator has cleared that any decision on Test cricket between India and Pakistan will be on the basis of the state of political relations between the two countries.
"Yes, it all depends on political relations. It has nothing to do with BCCI, nothing to do with ICC, nothing to do with anyone else. It is no one else's business. It's what the politicians think, what's the state of relations between the two countries politically and that will determine whether India will play Pakistan or not. Nothing else."
As of now, India and Pakistan will continue to compete against each other in multi-nation tournaments, and thus, Test cricket between the two countries is not on the cards in the near future.
