On Monday, June 10, Bangladesh suffered a heartbreaking four-runs defeat against South Africa which made group D wide open. Notably, with the win, Proteas, who have three wins in three games, have kept a foot in the next round. However, the game was for Bangladesh to win as they failed to chase a small target of 114 runs.

The Tigers took the game deep as they lost regular wickets on a difficult surface like Nassau County International Stadium. However, the fans were left disappointed by former skipper Shakib Al Hasan, who played a reckless shot and scored 3 (4). The disappointment stemmed from the fact that they hoped for Shakib to put his experience to use and stay at the crease to secure the win.

In the latest events, former India opener Virender Sehwag has come down heavily on Shakib and launched a verbal attack against the Bangladeshi cricketer. Sehwag, who is known to not mince his words, insulted Shakib by telling him to play as per his standards and also reminded him that he is no Gilchrist or Hayden to attempt a pull shot.

"If he was included in the squad for experience, then we were not able to see it. At least spend some time at this wicket, it is not like you are not Hayden or Gilchrist who can play a pull shot of a short ball, you are just a player from Bangladesh. Play according to your standards. When you are not able to play hook or pull, so just play the strokes that you know," Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Also, Sehwag added that Shakib should have retired from the shortest format of the game right after he played the 2023 World Cup. Notably, Hasan had issues in his eyes and was also out with an injury for a long time.

"I felt that Shakib's time in T20 cricket was up a long time back, during the last T20 World Cup. He has been captain for such a long time, he is such a senior player, and after that, if your numbers are like these, he should be ashamed of it, right?," Sehwag stated in the same discussion.
