Pat Cummins for Australia - (Source: AFP)
In a significant development, Australia's star seamer Pat Cummins has dropped a latest update on his fitness and stated that he is well on course for an early return. Notably, the right-arm seamer will miss the first Ashes Test because of his back injury.
The much-awaited five-match Test series is set to begin on November 20, and Pat Cummins will not be part of the first Test in Perth. However, the right-arm seamer stated that he is doing well in the nets and is on course to return for the 2nd Test at Gabba, which will take place in Brisbane from December 4.
Cummins bowling close to eight overs in nets
A report from Cricket.Australia.Au stated that Cummins is bowling close to eight overs in the nets, but with three-quarters of his run-up. However, the 32-year-old is said to be close to bowling at full pace as he is not showing any signs of discomfort or relapse.
"That's the aim, and we're building our plan for the second Test. It's probably not until you get a bit closer that you can really know where you're at. The good thing is that I'm pulling up well, and the body is great. We're trying to keep that second Test as a live option. I'll have a really good bowl in Perth, and by then I'll know where I'm at." Cummins said at the Seven Network's cricket launch on Thursday.
Cummins lose to four months without any cricket action
It is worth noting that Cummins last featured for Australia in July against the West Indies for a three-match Test series. However, the right-arm seamer has missed plenty of series since then and has now gone close to four months without featuring in any competitive game.
Thus, Cricket Australia will be extra cautious before declaring their regular skipper fit to take part in the Ashes.
