It took Australia more than a week since launching their 2023 World Cup campaign to register their opening points of the competition. The momentous occasion occurred after they handed Sri Lanka a five-wicket larruping in Lucknow to end their four-match losing streak across two different World Cup editions.

Adam Zampa, the mastermind behind Australia’s big win, was ably assisted by skipper Pat Cummins on the field. The legendary speedster removed both well-set Sri Lankan openers and entrapped Dunith Wellalage with a direct hit from mid-off during the first half of the contest.

After the match, Cummins talked about the significance of his side’s comprehensive performance and hailed the energy displayed by his players on the field in their must-win game.

'Outside noise doesn’t bother'- Pat Cummins after drought-ending win

During the post-match presentation, Australian skipper Pat Cummins hailed his team’s energy on the field that led to a colossal Sri Lankan batting collapse. The cricketer credited his bowlers for restricting Lanka to just 209 on a pitch where he believed 300 would have been a par score. He said:

“Nothing said much on the back of two losses. The energy on the field was great. They started very well. We bowled decently. We stayed at it. The bowlers hit the deck hard. I think high 300 was par on that.”

Pat Cummins also shrugged off any outside pressure, considering his Australian unit was comprehensively routed by South Africa and tournament hosts India in their first two matches of the 2023 World Cup. The skipper added that they have now taken their first steps in the competition, and are looking forward to keep the momentum going.

“There are a lot of people watching this. Outside noise doesn't bother us a lot. All parts of the game came together today. We’re sort of underway in the tournament and would want to keep it up.”

Australia will now face Pakistan for their subsequent World Cup 2023 challenge on October 20. The much-awaited contest will be played out at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
