Washington Sundar has highlighted the significant impact of coach Gautam Gambhir's backing during India's recent Test series against England. Gambhir's crucial decision to select Sundar over Kuldeep Yadav, prioritising batting depth, proved inspired as the all-rounder delivered consistently with the bat.
Sundar amassed 284 runs in four Tests at an average of 47.33. His maiden Test century was pivotal in securing a draw for India in the Manchester Test, justifying Gambhir's faith. While bowling opportunities were limited in seam-friendly conditions, Sundar still contributed seven wickets.
Washington Sundar Reflects On IPL Days With Gambhir
Reflecting on Gambhir's influence, Sundar drew parallels and shared a light-hearted memory while speaking to Wisden Cricket in an exclusive interview.
“100%, he also No. 5 on the back of his jersey. And obviously he was a left hander, who was extremely elegant. The only thing I didn't enjoy was bowling to him in the IPL. He was someone who was super successful against me,” Sundar said in a light-hearted chat.
Sundar then expressed deep appreciation for Gautam Gambhir's trust in the squad and admitted that he was happy seeing Gambhir succeed.
“But he is an amazing human being. He has had so much faith in all of us that we would fight at all times and win the game. Really glad to see him happy at the end of the series,” Sundar said.
This series result, a hard-fought 2-2 draw secured by a dramatic 6-run win at The Oval, silenced critics after earlier defeats and vindicated Gambhir's approach.
Sundar Praises Gill-Gambhir Duo
Sundar also praised the leadership dynamic between Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill, emphasising the positive environment they fostered.
“Gambhir, Gill have a lot of belief in their players. Credit to them for having such a calm dressing room throughout the series. Their communication was precise and clear on what was expected,” concluded Sundar.
With Gambhir now eyeing the Asia Cup, the Men in Blue, led by Suryakumar Yadav, are in full sway of the preparation as the tournament is set to begin from September 9 with India playing against the UAE on September 10.
