Australia flogged England by eight wickets on Day 4 of the pink-ball affair at the Gabba in Brisbane to go 2-0 up in the five-match 2025-26 Ashes Test series. Stand-in captain and legendary batter Steve Smith notched up the winning runs in just the tenth over of the second Australian innings with a huge six off Gus Atkinson.
Overall, Smith pumped 23* off just nine deliveries in his fiery run-chase cameo, and had a run-in with English pace demon Jofra Archer at one stage. At it turned out, the Australian captain won the exchange, dispatching Archer for two fours and a six in one over while the latter’s verbal sparks did little to halt the onslaught.
Steve Smith “not sure” what was said in the middle
While speaking with the reporters during the post-match press conference, Steve Smith refused to divulge details regarding his heated exchange with Jofra Archer. The legendary Australian batter laughingly responded that he was “not really sure” what was said out in the middle.
Steve Smith said:
“He (Jofra Archer) was bowling good pace. Not really too sure what he said and not sure what I said, either. And it’s really none of your business, either (laughs).”
Steve Smith added that with Jofra Archer bowling quick, he wanted to make full use of the short boundary by putting a “few in the stands”. He stated:
“The adrenaline was pumping… we didn’t need too many. Jofra was bowling pretty quick, there was a short boundary, so I thought, why not try and put a few in the stands?”
Steve Smith and Jofra Archer will now be crossing paths in the third Test of the 2025-26 Ashes series at the Adelaide Oval. The match will be played between December 17 and December 21.
