Chennai Super Kings lost their fifth consecutive game at the Chepauk with a four-wicket loss against Punjab Kings and are now officially out of IPL 2025. They have won just two of the 10 matches they have played this season, and it is the first time that they have not been able to reach playoffs in consecutive seasons.
Dhoni Opens Up On Missed Chances Against Punjab Kings
Now, after the loss, Dhoni has opened up on the painful campaign and the loss against Punjab Kings. He stated that it was the first time they got to a good total in the season, but they could have got more runs as the pitch was good to bat on. He also credited Curran and Brevis for their partnership but added that four wickets in the 19th over hurt their chances.
"I think the batting, yes, it was the first time that we put a good total on the board. But was it the par score? No. We could have got more runs. But it was a great partnership that from Curran and Brevis. I feel we have to take catches. It will help us slow down the opposition. From the batting unit, it was a good effort. But if you see, we didn't face the last four balls when we were batting and we lost four wickets in the 19th over. 7 balls makes a big difference in a T20 game."
Dhoni also applauded Sam Curran and called him a fighter. He added that the wicket was good one to bat, but they fell short by 15 runs. Dhoni had kind words for Dewald Brevis as well and mentioned that he has the power and brings energy onto the field. The CSK skipper also accepted that they needed some fresh air in their squad and called him an asset for the future.
(On Sam Curran) "Sam is a fighter. Whenever he turns up, he wants to contribute, either with bat or ball. The wickets here were on the slower side. He found it tough. But today's wicket was the best one we had at home this season. I think we fell short by 15 runs. (On Dewald Brevis) It's the momentum in the middle order. He is a good fielder. He has power and he can hit good balls to boundary. He gives that energy on the field. We needed that fresh air, someone not caught up in the spiral. I'm happy with him because he can be an asset moving ahead."
CSK's next match is against RCB on May 3 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The loyal Yellove Army fans would be hoping that their team comes out all guns blazing in that game and avenges the heartbreaking loss of the previous season.
