Chennai Super Kings, the five-time IPL champions, have become the first team to get officially knocked out of the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League. They lost by four wickets against Punjab Kings and it is their eighth loss in 10 matches. They have just four points in their kitty to show for their efforts, and can reach a maximum of 12 points if they win all their matches after the loss to Punjab.

CSK also have lost five consecutive games at the Chepauk this year, and it is the most they have lost at their home ground in IPL history. PBKS have now defeated CSK seven times out of the last eight games. The win has taken them to the second position on the points table with 13 points and six wins in 10 matches.

Also, it is the first time in IPL history, that CSK have failed to make it to the playoffs in consecutive seasons. CSK started off the season with a win, but with injuries and key players not performing, they could not get over the line, and it has resulted in a disastrous season for the five-time champions.

They made some bold changes after a string of losses, and one of them was to bring back Sam Curran in the XI. He struggled in the last match, but in this game, he batted brilliantly with 88 off just 47 balls. However, despite his best efforts, Chahal's hattrick restricted CSK to 190 on a pitch where they needed a score in excess of 200.

In the run-chase, the young openers of Punjab started well. Priyansh Arya fell after a promising start, but Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh stitched a strong stand and brought PBKS close to the target. Shreyas Iyer scored 72 off 41 balls, and though there were some nervy moments after his wicket, Punjab Kings crossed the line in the final over.
