India’s first Test match of the five-match Test series in England kicked off in emphatic fashion at Headingley on Friday, as Shubman Gill’s men sent a strong statement both with the bat. While Test captain Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal led India to a commanding 359/3 at stumps, former India cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu stole the limelight off the field with a fiery comment on Michael Vaughan’s pre-series prediction.
In a video shared by Star Sports on X (formerly Twitter), Sidhu launched a strong takedown of Vaughan, who had boldly declared before the series that India had 'arrived again to lose,' predicting a 3-1 series win for England. Vaughan had pointed out the inexperience of the Indian squad and the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
But Day 1 painted a completely different picture. Gill’s century on his captaincy debut, Jaiswal’s stylish knock, and significant contribution by Rishabh Pant in the final session, helped India to give an amazing start.
Navjot Singh Sidhu Destroys Michael Vaughan
India's on-field performance gave Sidhu the perfect platform to go on the offensive. “Fools grow without watering. Michael Vaughan, your predictions. They’re always wrong,” Sidhu said.
Sidhu did not just stop at the Headingley result. He also tore into Vaughan’s track record as a predictor. He cited the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where India beat Australia 2-1. He also brought up Vaughan’s recent blunder, where he predicted Australia to be the winner during the 2025 WTC final.
“Michael Vaughan, your predictions, they’re always wrong. BGT and then the South Africans are never going to win against Australia. I hope you’re not predicting an India win now. Look at your bowling attack. They’re pedestrians. Three of the Indian batsmen are stepping out and hitting them like spinners. Boss noise proves nothing. Even a hen, while laying an egg, cackles as if she’s laying an asteroid. Stop making noise, do something. There is no suffering that pity will not insult. Man, you’re in a pitiable situation," he added.
India will look to continue their domination on Day 2, with Gill and Pant well-set and the possibility of a 500+ first-innings total looming large.
