Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batter Narayan Jagadeesan has received a shock maiden Test call-up, joining India’s squad in England as cover for the injured Rishabh Pant ahead of the fifth Test at The Oval. The 29-year-old, uncapped at India A level, replaces vice-captain Pant, who is ruled out for six weeks with foot injury.
Jagadeesan will serve as backup to Dhruv Jurel, with the call-up arriving unexpectedly as he prepared for practice. However, amidst the call-up shock, Jagadeesan namedrops former CSK player who mentored him.
Jagadeesan Credits Robin Uthappa For Mentorship
Speaking to TOI, Jagadeesan credited former India star Robin Uthappa, his teammate at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from 2021-2022, as a key mentor who helped him navigate challenges and refine his game after an IPL setback.
“We have known each other since our CSK days. A couple of years ago, after not being picked in the IPL, I felt I needed a mentor, and we got in touch. He has helped me a lot. He has given me a sense of security about how I feel as a cricketer. I have worked with him to improve my mindset in terms of goal-setting, manifesting and also technical aspects of the game, especially in T20 cricket. He has a lot of experience and has gone through ups and downs and knows how it works in international cricket,” Jagadeesan said.
Jagadeesan's "Surprise" Dream Realised
An elated Jagadeesan revealed his disbelief at the life-changing news, emphasizing its significance for him and his support network.
“I was surprised when I got the call. It is the most significant step of my career and a dream come true. I have grown up thinking about this very moment. It is a great feeling not just for me but my parents and coach as well,” Jagadeesan said.
Narayan Jagadeesan brings a formidable first-class record: 3,373 runs at an average of 47.50 across 52 matches. Jagadeesan now prepares to support the squad for the crucial fifth Test against England. While unlikely to debut immediately, his selection signals he is now firmly in the national selectors' plans.
