'My Intention Was Always...,' Tom Curran Opens Up On His Four-Match Ban In BBL

Tom Curran held deep regret and apologised for his poor act of intimidating an umpire as the England cricketer's four-match Big Bash League (BBL) ban was upheld by the league's authorities on Sunday (December 24).

Curran has been found guilty of a level-three offence for 'intimidation or attempted intimidation of an umpire' as per the BBL regulations. The breach saw the England pacer almost jam into match official Muhammad Qureshi before a game this month while the umpire stood his ground wanting him not to shadow bowl running on the playing surface.

Curran, who is one of Sydney Sixers' prominent overseas signings, has now apologised for his act after the BBL authorities upheld a proposed ban on him for four league matches of the tournament.

Tom Curran Apologises For Shocking BBL Act

"I have had a lot of time to reflect on my actions and the incident that occurred in Launceston on December 11. Across my decade-long professional career I have always sought to have a friendly and respectful relationship with match officials, which I believe is reflected in the lack of prior code of conduct breaches across the world."

Curran said "I deeply regret" his action and the disrespect caused to umpire Qureshi as the standing official was merely doing his job of keeping the playing surface protected and unhindered by the cricketer's spikes before the start of the BBL match.

"I deeply regret the way I reacted to it and the resultant impact for umpire Qureshi, the Sydney Sixers and myself personally."

"My intention was always to veer off to umpire Qureshi’s right, in a similar way to my run-up at the other end. I had never considered running into him and never considered that he would think that was my intention."

"However, on reflection, I should have repositioned my run-up a metre or so to my left. I would not do the same if the situation arose again, and I am sorry," he added.

The incident meant that Curran missed Sixers' match against the Adelaide Strikers on Friday (December 22) night and won't be returning until the club's New Year's fixture on January 3 versus the Brisbane Heat.
