Chennai Super Kings’ young fast bowler, Matheesha Pathirana, recently shared how much MS Dhoni means to him. He said Dhoni is like a father figure in his cricket journey and has played a big role in shaping his career in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Matheesha Pathirana joined CSK in 2022 as a replacement for injured Adam Milne. Since then, he has built a close bond with Dhoni, who has helped him both on and off the field; not just as a captain but like a family member.

On April 4, CSK posted a documentary video on social media where Pathirana’s mother also thanked Dhoni. She said, “There are no words for Dhoni. He is really like God. Matheesha respects Dhoni the same way he respects his father.”

Pathirana also talked about the guidance and mentorship he receives from Dhoni. The 22-year-old called him his “cricketing father”, saying:

“Dhoni is like my father because of all the support and advice he gives, He also shared a memory of the first time he met Dhoni. Dhoni greeted him with, “Hi Mali, how are you?” The nickname “Mali” comes from Pathirana’s bowling style, which is similar to Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga, earning him the name “Baby Malinga.”

Meanwhile, CSK started their IPL 2025 campaign with a solid win against Mumbai Indians, but then lost their next two matches to RCB and Rajasthan Royals. They’ll be looking to bounce back in their upcoming match against Delhi Capitals on April 5 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
