In a recent development, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has lent his voice to India skipper Rohit Sharma's assertion on the critical importance of 'hunger' in succeeding at the Test level. Following India's remarkable victory over England in the fourth Test, Rohit Sharma emphasised the necessity for players to display unwavering desire and hunger to excel in the longest format of the game.

Sunil Gavaskar, echoed Rohit's sentiments, emphasizing the significance of commitment and loyalty to the Indian cricketing cause. He underlined that the privileges and acclaim garnered by players are owed to Indian cricket, necessitating a reciprocal loyalty from the players towards the sport.

Here's what he said:

"He's absolutely right. The ones who want to play Test cricket, you look at them. I've been saying this for years. The players are what they are because of Indian cricket. The stage of life and career they are at, is all because of Indian cricket. The money, fame and recognition that they have got is because of Indian cricket. So you've got to show some loyalty towards Indian cricket.

he further said:

"And if you don't show that for whatever reasons and say 'I won't play, won't play that' Rohit is absolutely right in saying the ones who have the hunger, the ones who are willing to put the effort, will be given more opportunities going ahead. If this is the attitude of the selectors then it will be good for Indian cricket. We've seen many players pick and choose, this shouldn't happen."

While neither Rohit nor Gavaskar explicitly named any players, the discussion indirectly pointed towards centrally contracted cricketers Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, who chose to skip the Ranji Trophy despite directives from the team management and the BCCI. Gavaskar hinted that such actions might signify a lack of aspiration or commitment towards Test matches.
