Australia’s Ashes hero, Mitchell Starc, is set to make his long-awaited return to the BBL after an 11-year gap. On the eve of his return, Starc reiterated his commitment to Test cricket amid talks over his supposed retirement.

In Australia’s Ashes 2025-26 triumph, Starc picked 31 wickets, thus earning the Player of the Series accolade. He led the Aussies’ pace attack in the absence of Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins.

However, despite this heroic performance, speculation over Starc’s retirement is on the rise.

Mitchell Starc on his future career priorities

Amid this heated debate, Mitchell Starc has made it clear that playing for Australia, especially in Test cricket, remains his top priority.

While many players are extending their careers through franchise leagues, Starc is focused on staying fresh and available for the national team.

“There’s no shortage of cricket in Australia, and that’s certainly my priority. I’ve made decisions based on wanting to play my best cricket and always be available for the Test team, and that’s not going to change,” he told Code Sports.

The 35-year-old also ruled out the idea of playing into his 40s, saying his pace is his biggest strength and he knows it will not last forever.

Starc retired from T20Is last year and has already hinted that once his body stops responding, he will step away from the game.

“I won't be bowling when I'm 40, no. Part of my role is my airspeed, and I've been able to hold on to that for five tests this summer. So, whilst I'm still doing that and playing that role for the group, I love pulling on the Baggy Green and going out with some of my close mates. That's going to change at some point, and my body will let me know before anything else, I'd say, but I won't be bowling at 40.”

Starc’s first BBL game in 11 years and derby banter

Interestingly, Mitchell Starc last played in the Big Bash in December 2014 and has only featured in ten BBL matches across his career. International duties and workload management have kept him away from the league, making this return a special moment for fans.

He will line up alongside Steve Smith and Babar Azam for the Sixers in Friday’s derby, adding star power to the contest. There is always extra intensity in Sydney clashes, and Starc admitted the rivalry brings out strong emotions.

With a smile, Starc also joked that he might stick a few bouncers up Sam Konstas if the young opener bats.

"We've seen a little bit of banter through the Big Bash this year. (There are) some guys in that squad that we as New South Wales players spend a fair bit of time with throughout the year. So maybe stick a few bouncers up, Sammy Konstas, if he plays."

The Sydney Sixers are currently fifth on the table and need at least one win from their remaining matches to stay in the finals race. Starc’s return gives their bowling attack a major boost, especially in a high-pressure derby game.
