Jasprit Bumrah ‘bowled’ his way to an easy win for Team India against Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in their third World Cup 2023 outing. The speedster contained runs with the new-ball upfront, before rattling Mohammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan’s stumps in quick succession to finish with astonishing figures of 2-19 from his seven overs.

His pace mates Mohammed Siraj, Hardik Pandya and leading spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav also joined in the fun with two wickets each as the Indian bowling unit dismantled Pakistan from 155-2 to 191 all out in a space of an hour.

Fittingly adjudged as ‘Player of the Match’ for his efforts, Bumrah explained his work process and revealed how his ability to read pitches helped him on the big stage. The speedster also gave his take on the delivery that deceived a well-set Rizwan against the run-of-play in Ahmedabad.

‘Now I’m experienced…’ says Bumrah after winning spell

After the match, Jasprit Bumrah said that the team quickly realised the nature of the wicket upfront, which eventually prompted them to bowl at hard lengths to Pakistani batters. When asked about his own ability of reading and understanding the pitches, the speed veteran said:

“It felt good. Usually, you try to analyse the wicket as soon as possible. We realised the wicket is on the slower side so we wanted to bowl hard lengths. We were trying to make it as difficult as possible. Just being aware I guess. I used to ask a lot of questions when I was young and that helps me now. Now I'm experienced. In my younger days they (seniors) were used to being troubled by me sometimes, but it helps to read the wicket and try different options.”

During the 34th over of the Pakistan innings, Jasprit Bumrah deceived a well-set Mohammad Rizwan with a slower-one than angled in to hit the off stump. When asked to summarise his bold delivery from the contest, the 29-year-old claimed that he decided to go slow upon noticing the turn Ravindra Jadeja was getting during his spin bowling spell from the other end.

Bumrah even compared his own slower ones to that of a spinner’s slower ball, and cited his dismissal of Rizwan as just one of the occasions where his execution worked.

“We were bowling in the middle overs and I saw Jaddu's ball was turning, not too much but a little bit. I count my slower ball as a spinner's slower ball, one of those days where it came off.”

The cricketer also snared Shadab Khan with a scorching reverse-swinger. Describing his swinging delivery, he added:

“Little phase where there was reverse swing, one of the occasions when the white ball was reverse swinging.”

Jasprit Bumrah will now turn up for Team India in their subsequent World Cup 2023 challenge against Bangladesh. The match is scheduled to take place on October 19 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
