There was only one reason for fans to be excited about the India vs Australia contest, and that was the comeback of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after eight long months. The duo last played for India in the Champions Trophy final, and with them not playing the Tests and T20Is anymore, their comeback was delayed.

However, it turned out to be a disaster for the fans as Rohit Sharma (8) and Virat Kohli (0) departed cheaply and put their side in a tricky situation. The duo was urged by Chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy for future ODI selection, as the pair had been rusty, and that was proven in the first ODI of the series.

RO-KO should learn from MS Dhoni

Following a disappointing outing, former Indian pacer Varun Aaron urged Rohit, and Kohli to learn from MS Dhoni. He stated that to stay match-fit, RO-KO needs to play more cricket, and they should learn from MSD, who continued to play Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy despite taking retirement from Tests.

“Play domestic cricket. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy starts in November and then the Vijay Hazare Trophy starts in December. That’s the best way to be in touch with the game. I remember when MS Dhoni retired from Test cricket, he played a few Syed Mushaq Ali and Vijay Hazare Trophy. That’s a great way to stay in touch. I am sure both the batters are going to look at that. Now, you are not playing two formats. They are going to need match practice,” said Aaron on Star Sports.

MS Dhoni played for Jharkhand in the domestic circuit after retiring from Tests in 2015, and he also featured in seven Vijay Hazare Trophy matches in the 2015-16 season.

Rohit, Kohli's only domestic appearance in 2025

After a disastrous Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where both the legendary batters failed to deliver, pressure mounted on them to work on their skills as they entered the domestic circuit. Interestingly, both of them played only one game each as Rohit represented Mumbai, and Kohli played for Delhi.

Both stars failed on their only domestic outing, and that was the last time they played a domestic game. However, now, Agarkar has made it clear that both stars need to play in domestic cricket to be considered for future tours.
