Virat Kohli’s return to international cricket didn’t go as planned, as the legendary batter played a rash shot and was dismissed without opening his account in the first ODI of the series against Australia. With Rohit Sharma departing early, Kohli needed to hold the fort alongside the newly appointed captain, Shubman Gill.

Kohli faced seven deliveries on a trot without scoring a single run, as pressure mounted on him to get off the mark. His patience gave up on the eighth ball as Starc bowled a length ball well outside the off as Kohli went for a flashy drive, and Cooper Connolly at point took a stunning diving catch to dismiss the Indian batter for naught.

Kohli overtakes Rohit in unwanted duck list

This was Kohli’s first dismissal without opening his account in ODIs in Australia, and with that, he has surpassed Rohit Sharma in an unwanted list. This was Kohli's 17th duck in ODIs, and he has now overtaken Rohit in the list of Indian players with most ducks in ODI cricket.

  • Sachin Tendulkar leads the charts with 20 ducks in ODIs, but for obvious reasons, as the maestro has also played the most matches (463). Javagal Srinath, the Indian pacer, sits second on the list, with Yuvraj and Anil Kumble occupying the third position.
  • Kohli is now at the fourth position with 17 dismissals, and Rohit, and Ganguly make the top five list of Indian batters with the most ducks.

Kohli's ODI career in jeopardy

It is a harsh statement, but Kohli’s ODI career is in jeopardy, especially after the knock in the first ODI. When the squad was announced for the Australian tour, chief selector Ajit Agarkar clearly stated that he, and Rohit had to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for future ODI selections.

Reportedly, the Indian team management doesn’t see Kohli in the scheme of things for the 2027 World Cup, and his failure in the ongoing ODI series will strengthen the ideology of the management.
