The all-important T20 World Cup is just around the corner, and India, the winners of the inaugural edition, have also named a strong 15-member squad. Rohit Sharma is the captain while Hardik Pandya has been named as vice captain and just like after every Indian team selection, the debates around the choices have been quite intense.

Now, Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar have also spoken their minds in the all-important press conference, and one important question that popped out in front of them was about Rohit Sharma returning as T20I captain in place of Hardik Pandya, who was leading the Men in Blue in the shortest format after the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Ajit Agarkar stated that there was no doubt about Rohit Sharma leading in the World Cup and the decision to make him captain for the marquee event is not forced by anyone on selectors

"We knew Hardik Pandya has led in few series but Rohit Sharma’s form in the world cup. Rohit is a great player and it’s not forced upon us (him being the captain)."

The Hitman added that his absence was due to the priority they gave according to formats. He stated that Ajit Agarkar became selector a bit late and they were clear of their plans even before the current selection committee came into the picture.

“We give priority to the format which has a world cup. Test cricket was the constant format, then ODI World Cup. That is what we discussed. Ajit came a little later into the picture and may not know the decisions of the previous committee regarding who should be rested and shouldn’t.

India is all set to start their T20 World Cup campaign on 5th of June against Ireland and it would be interesting to see how Rohit Sharma and co. respond after the heartbreak of 2023 World Cup.
