Rajasthan Royals had a forgettable day on the field last night, as Mumbai Indians crushed them by 100 runs, securing the top spot in the points table. While this win marked MI's sixth consecutive victory, the Royals suffered a humiliating group-stage elimination from the competition.

Adam Gilchrist Explains What Proved Costly For RR

After the RR vs MI encounter concluded, former Australian batter and IPL-winning captain Adam Gilchrist explained the reasons behind the Royals' downfall in the 2025 season. Speaking to Cricbuzz, Gilchrist stated that RR committed a series of mistakes in the IPL auction and eventually paid the price.

He highlighted how releasing England's swashbuckling batter Jos Buttler backfired on the Royals, seeking accountability from their management for this costly error.

"We heard Mike Hussey admit that they (CSK) got it wrong at the auction, and they are out. Someone needs to be accountable for what happened with the decision on Jos Buttler. RR have got it wrong, and they find themselves eliminated as well. So, there has got to be some accountability. I would have thought certainly, internally, they have got to be asking questions. That was a monumental mistake," Gilchrist reckoned.

Did Jos Buttler's Release Derail RR's IPL Campaign?

In a surprising move, Rajasthan Royals decided to part ways with their premier batter Jos Buttler, retaining the likes of Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel ahead of the 2025 mega auction. Gujarat Titans eventually grabbed the opportunity of signing Buttler, roping him in for INR 15.75 Crores.

Buttler's absence certainly destabilised RR's batting unit, as they heavily relied on Yashasvi Jaiswal, with Jurel, Parag, Hetmyer and Nitish Rana not living up to the expectations. On the other hand, Buttler exhibited his class in GT colours, emerging as their go-to player at three in IPL 2025.
