Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has expressed the importance of handling the recovery process of Jasprit Bumrah, India's prominent fast bowler, with utmost caution before the upcoming ODI World Cup. Recent reports have indicated that Bumrah is expected to regain fitness in time to participate in the T20Is against Ireland in August. However, Shastri has warned against repeating the mistake made by Pakistan in the past.

Shastri highlighted the case of Pakistani speedster Shaheen Afridi, who was hurried back into action for the T20 World Cup but ended up being sidelined from competitive cricket for over four months.

Shastri believes that India should learn from this incident and take a more measured approach in managing Bumrah's recovery, ensuring that he is fully fit and ready for the challenges ahead.

In an exclusive interview with The Week, Ravi Shastri shared his perspective on India's approach to managing Jasprit Bumrah. He emphasized the need for careful handling of the fast bowler's recovery process and said:

"He (Bumrah) is a very important cricketer. But if you rush him for the World Cup then you might lose him for four months later on, much like Shaheen Afridi. So there's a thin line and it needs to be thought about."

Additionally, Ravi Shastri expressed his belief that Hardik Pandya could potentially assume the role of full-time captain for the T20I and ODI formats following the conclusion of the World Cup. Shastri suggested that Pandya possesses the qualities and potential to take on this leadership responsibility.

"Let's be clear. His body (Hardik) cannot cope with Test cricket. After the World Cup, I feel he should take over captaincy in white-ball cricket. Rohit should lead India in the World Cup, no question there."
