'Bhaad Me Gaya Pitch': Former India Coach Ravi Shastri Rant Goes Viral As Australia Dismantle India in WTC Final [Watch]

The ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2023 between India and Australia, witnessed a one-sided contest on Day 1 at The Oval. Powered on by Travis Head (146*) and Steven Smith's (95*) 251-run stand, Pat Cummins and Co. have raced to 327 for 3 on stumps, leaving the Rohit Sharma-led side bemused.

Sharma won winning the toss and opted to field with overcast conditions and a green track on offer, which did not have much effect on the game as many expected. India have often fallen into the trap of playing into the hands of the conditions, and not on their strengths; more so under this current Rahul Dravid and Sharma regime.

India's body language lacked intent and bowlers were clueless on the first day as Australia piled on runs on a four-man pace attack, which is now in question as well, with Ravindra Jadeja playing as the lone spinner.

However, amidst all this, an old video of former coach Ravi Shastri has emerged, where the all-rounder is heard talking about taking the pitch out of contention and putting emphasis on picking 20 wickets in a Test.

The said clip is from after India's win over South Africa in Ranchi Test in 2019, and claiming the series 3-0.

Here's what Shastri said

"Our motto was to take pitches out of the equation. 'Bhaad me gaya pitch' (to hell with the pitches). Whether it’s Johannesburg or Melbourne or Mumbai, we want to take the pitch out of the equation. With the batting line-up we have, if they post big totals and then we have bowlers who can take 20 wickets – we can keep taking those world championship points we’re after. Rahane was never going to go anywhere, he had to rediscover his touch which he’s done."

India gained success in Test overseas under Shastri during his tenure from 2017 to 2019. Out of 43 Tests, India won 25 Tests with Shastri as head coach, which include series wins in Australia (2018-19, and 2020-21), and West Indies (2019-2020).
