Rassie van der Dussen has hinted out a possibility of retiring from South African cricket. Aged 36, the blistering top-order batter is currently in Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. He cracked a match-winning 52 against Afghanistan last week as South Africa maintains the primo position on the Group B points table.

Rassie van der Dussen, aged 36, stated that the ongoing 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and in the UAE might well be his final appearance in an ICC tournament. As quoted by ESPNCricinfo, he said:

“It's definitely a possibility that it's my last ICC tournament. I'm not saying that with any preconceived ideas that I'll call time on it, or management will call time on my career. It's just the reality.”

Rassie van der Dussen added that while he has not given much thought to his post-retirement plans, he stated that he will definitely accept a contract in league cricket upon being offered.

“My ultimate goal has always been to play for the Proteas. People are asking me, Are you going to play leagues afterwards? I don't know. I don't know if the prospect of not playing for the Proteas goes away, I'll have that hunger to play in the leagues. Representing my country has always been one of my big and only goals, so if that falls away, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. If I'm offered another contract, I'll definitely take it and commit for that time period.”

Rassie van der Dussen made his international debut for South Africa back in October 2018, i.e., at an age of nearly 30. To date, he has played 18 Tests, 69 ODIs and 50 T20I matches for his country to tally over 4,500 international runs.

The lanky top-order batter scored 2,516 of those runs in 63 ODI innings at a prolific batting average of 48.38, recording six tons and 15 half-centuries in the process. He also maintains an astonishing strike rate of nearly 130 after cracking 1,257 T20I runs in 46 innings.

As of now, Rassie van der Dussen is prepping himself to go up against England in South Africa’s final Group B match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
