'Idea Is To Get 150' - Irfan Pathan Predicts Conservative Approach From India In T20 World Cup 2024

Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan firmly believes that India will switch gears in the group stages games of the T20 World Cup and aim for a target of 150 runs as drop-in pitches of the USA continue to be a nightmare for batters.

The 2024 T20 World Cup has kicked off on an underwhelming note, especially in the USA, as the drop-in pitches have become a paradise for bowlers, and the slow outfield is further adding to batters' woes.

Notably, the Indian cricket team is scheduled to play three of its four league games at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, and the conditions there have been extremely tough for batters.

Hence, ahead of the tournament's inaugural game against Ireland, former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has issued a word of caution for India.

He said India should adopt a different approach and refrain from playing aggressive cricket. Instead, the batters should adjust to conditions and aim for a total of 150-160, which could essentially be a match-win on the drop-in pitches.

Irfan Pathan also said that Virat Kohli's role will be crucial as he is the senior batter in the squad who has the ability to adapt to conditions quickly and play according to the team's needs.

"Kohli will have a lead role in setting the template on these kind of pitches and determining what could be a good score for the team as per the conditions. You may also see India try to score 140-150 every game and not aim to go past the 200-210 mark. If they score it then well and good, but the idea would be to get past that 150-run mark," Pathan said.

While Irfan didn't rule out the possibility of a 200+ plus score, he believes the initial goal will be to get past the 150-run mark.

India will play against Ireland tomorrow at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York before facing arch-rivals Pakistan at the same venue on June 9.
