Despite having a stellar 2023, Shubman Gill, in the second half of the year has struggled to score runs, which is becoming a factor behind the batter's recent criticism.

In the ongoing two-Test series against South Africa, Gill has failed to churn out runs despite being pushed down to his favoured position No.3, scoring 64 runs in three innings.

Former India opener Kris Srikkanth, who is known for his straightforward opinion has stated that Gill needs to perform on the big stage across formats to be really called 'King'.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the 1983 World Cup winner compared Gill with Virat Kohli, who irrespective of conditions, formats, and opposition scores runs with impeccable consistency, which earned him the title 'King'.

Srikkanth brings down hype around Gill

“Why are we calling Virat Kohli the King? Look at his record, even in the last year, be it Test matches, ODIs or T20Is. Just look at his records. I have nothing more to say. Yes, I accept you cannot produce a Virat Kohli every time. Everybody cannot be producing Virat Kohli (Kohli-like numbers). But you have to try and get to at least a bit of that stature."

"I think the hype around Shubman Gill, quite a few are saying ‘he is the next this, next that.’ I think we will have to wait and see. I would not overrate him, I would not want to underestimate him.”

Meanwhile, Gill crossed the milestone mark of 1,000 Test run on Day 1 of the Cape Town Test, which came in his 38th innings.
