India are all set to start a new chapter in Test cricket as they take on England in the first match of a five-Test series starting June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. This match is special because it's not just the beginning of a new series, but also the beginning of a new era for Indian cricket.

With senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from Test cricket, 25-year-old Shubman Gill has been given the responsibility of leading the team. Rishabh Pant will be his vice-captain.

KL Rahul Shares His Advice To Shubman Gill As New Test Captain

Ahead of the big game, senior player KL Rahul shared that he called Gill as soon as he heard the news of him becoming the new Test captain.

“I reached out to Shubman the minute the team was announced, and when he was announced (as) the captain," ," Rahul said during an interview with Sony Sports Network.

“(I told him) You will always find me around, any help, any guidance, if you need someone to share something with or talk to, I’m always there. But I believe you need to give people their space to really follow their gut instinct. If they need help, I’m always there," he added.

“We have been together. (If) We don't get results our way, somewhere along the way, everyone makes mistakes. That's not going to change. We are going to try and help out everyone in the team. I'm always there,” said the batter.

This Test series is also the start of a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Along with new leadership, the team has welcomed some fresh faces. Left-handed batter Sai Sudharsan and fast bowler Arshdeep Singh have received their first-ever Test call-ups. Middle-order batter Karun Nair is also making a comeback to the squad after being out since 2017.

Notably, Shubman Gill officially became India’s 37th Test captain on May 24, 2025, and now he’s ready to lead the team into a brand new era.

This new journey begins with the Headingley Test and continues with matches at Edgbaston (July 2-6), Lord’s (July 10-14), Old Trafford (July 23-27), and The Oval (July 31-August 4).
