'I Think He Will': Ponting Backs Kohli To Break Tendulkar's 'Illustrious' ODI Record

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Former skipper Virat Kohli came to India's rescue in their six-wicket win over Australia in Chennai on Sunday and kicked off his ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in style.

Kohli slammed a match-winning 85 under tough conditions and narrowly missed his 48th ODI hundred as well. The Indian legend is standing on the cusp of history, nearing former India captain Sachin Tendulkar's tally of 49 ODI hundreds.

Former Australia skipper, who himself has 30 ODI centuries, backed the modern-day great to go past the batting maestro's tally during the ongoing World Cup 2023.

Speaking to ICC Review, Ponting three-time World Cup winner, stated that if not surpass Tendulkar, Kohli could easily level 49 ODI tons, in what could potentially be his final appearance in the global showpiece event.

Here's what Ponting said

“I think he will. I think he'll definitely get two hundreds, whether he gets the three is another thing. But the venues, the wickets and the grounds in India are just so conducive to scoring, making big runs. Who knows with him, it's probably his last World Cup as well. If he gets that mindset, and we saw that he's in pretty good touch, and we know with him he's always hungry. He's a winner, he wants success for himself and for his team.

There is every chance at the end of this World Cup he could be equal with, if not breaking Sachin’s record, which is remarkable within itself,”

Kohli will be in action today when India clashes against Afghanistan in the former's hometown in Delhi.
