The Duleep Trophy 2024 is proving to be a spectacular event for the fans and for the players. The competitive tournament is giving a valuable opportunity to the players to showcase their skills and get match-fit for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh.

Controversial DRS call evokes emotion in Ashwin

However, it is also surrounded by controversy, and one such event occurred during the India C Vs India D Match. The controversy took place when India C captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad took a DRS decision against Ricky Bhui, who was given not-out by the on-field umpire for a close lbw call.

On Day 2 of the Duleep Trophy contest, Bhui, batting for India D in their second innings came on the front-foot against Manav Suthar and was trapped lbw for 44. There was a loud shout from the fielding team, but the umpire gave him not-out. Gaikwad, took a risky call and went upstairs for a review, and upon consideration, the original decision was reversed and Bhui was given out.

Ashwin, is not playing in the Duleep Trophy, but is keeping a close tab on it, and had his say on the faulty technique of Bhui.

Ashwin's interesting take on Bhui's faulty technique

Ashwin reckons that the DRS introduction in Duleep Trophy is a great learning experience for Bhui and other youngsters. He talked about Bhui's falty technique, stating that the batter puts his pad forward when coming onto the front-foot, and thus inviting more chances for lbw calls.

Normally, when a batter takes a stride, the umpires generally give the lbw decision in the favour of batters, however, Ashwin believes that with the introduction of DRS, batters cannot escape with this technique.

"This was not a faulty technique pre DRS but now it is. Back in the day batters were given not out just because they managed to get on the front foot. Now, keeping your bat behind the pad can be fatal, imagine someone making the climb to international cricket without getting this experience Ricky got yesterday. He could very well take an entire test series to understand what he needs to work on and his career could well be over.

Talking about the match, India C, led by Ruturaj made light work of India D, winning the game by 4-wickets. They needed 233 runs to get the first points on the board, and they eventually achieved the target, despite minor hiccups.
