India’s young wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel is making waves in international cricket, and his childhood coach believes he could follow in MS Dhoni’s footsteps.

Jurel recently smashed his maiden Test century against the West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, further establishing himself as a key player for India.

Dhruv Jurel’s coach makes a big statement on his Test future

Phoolchand Sharma, who coached Dhruv Jurel as a child, told Sports Tak that Jurel’s style sets him apart from current India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant.

"Rishabh Pant is a different type of player. He is a batsman-keeper. But Dhruv Jurel is a keeper-batsman. So if we are a test team, we want a professional keeper for the keeping. So in keeping, I can say that Dhruv Jurel will be compared with MS Dhoni" Phoolchand said.

Since Dhruv is a professional wicketkeeper, he is likely to be compared a lot to former legend MS Dhoni. The coach also added that the 24-year-old will go on to become India’s main wicketkeeper in the future.

"He is performing brilliantly; he scored good runs for India A against Australia A at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. After that, he smashed a century in the 1st Test against the West Indies. He is doing great performances, he is a very big player and he will surely become India's main wicketkeeper batter in coming time" he added.

Dhruv Jurel has played 6 Tests so far, scoring 380 runs in nine innings. His performances behind the stumps have also impressed selectors, especially when he stepped in after Pant suffered a foot injury during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025.

Jurel kept wickets in both the fourth and fifth Tests of the series, scoring a brilliant 125 runs in the first Test to help India defeat the West Indies by an innings and 140 runs.

Dhruv Jurel gets ODI call-up after Test heroics

Meanwhile, Dhruv Jurel was selected as the second wicketkeeper alongside KL Rahul for the upcoming ODI tour to Australia, despite not having played an ODI yet.

Jurel impressed with a century against the West Indies in the first Test, while Sanju Samson, who many expected to be the backup keeper, was left out. This decision has sparked outrage, but the management affirms its trust in the young keeper.
