According to Saqib Mahmood, the legendary James Anderson could potentially extend his professional cricket career until he reaches the age of 50. Amid a challenging period in the ongoing Ashes 2023 series, discussions about Anderson's future have intensified.

Nevertheless, Mahmood is confident that Anderson will prolong his career even beyond the conclusion of the Ashes 2023.

Mahmood expressed confidence in Anderson's ability to overcome his recent setback, emphasising that every cricketer faces blips in their careers. He firmly believes that Anderson's legacy will be cherished for years to come, recognising him as one of the sport's finest players.

“I’d like to think he’s going to keep playing on after this. He’s been so consistent, he’s just had a little blip over the last few weeks and I am sure he will come good. You don’t get that many wickets without blips in your career, so I don’t think that is any biggie," Saqib Mahmood told the PA news agency.

"In a few years’ time after he retires or whenever that may be – he’ll probably play until he’s 50 – is when you’ll realise I was around a very special cricketer and he’ll go down as one of the best in the game."

While Anderson's performance in the Ashes series has faced scrutiny, especially after a modest showing in the Manchester Test where he managed just one wicket, his overall contribution to the series has been comparatively lower with only three wickets in the first two games, conceding 226 runs.

At his age, questions regarding Anderson's selection arise if he fails to perform, potentially leading to speculation about retirement. However, Mahmood believes that Anderson's determination will drive him to continue playing despite the challenges.

Anderson, who will celebrate his 41st birthday on Sunday, has been included in the 14-man squad for the fifth and final Test of the Ashes 2023. While his performance will be under scrutiny, there is no denying the invaluable experience and skill that Anderson brings to the team.
