India’s star pacer Mohammed Shami has lived through a life filled with struggles, yet his bowling performances have consistently impressed the Indian cricket fraternity. The 33-year-old has been the leading wicket-taker in the last three ODI World Cup tournaments.

Recently, his friend Umesh Kumar shared a harrowing story about Shami’s life during a particularly tumultuous period, marked by both on-field and off-field challenges, including a highly publicized divorce and allegations of domestic violence and match-fixing.

He wanted to do something drastic: Umesh

Although Shami has previously spoken about his suicidal thoughts, Umesh provided deeper insights into one especially dark night.

"It also came in the news that he wanted to do something drastic that night [end his life]. It was around 4 AM in the morning when I got up to drink water. I was on my way to the kitchen when I saw that he was standing on the balcony. It was the 19th floor we were living in. I understood what happened. That night of Shami's career, I feel, was the longest, "  Umesh recounted in a podcast.

He also mentioned the moment Shami received a clean chit on the match-fixing allegations.

"Later, one day, when we were talking, he got a message on his phone saying he got a clean chit from the committee that was investigating the matter. He was probably happier that day than he would have been if he had won a World Cup," he added.

Shami's most recent competitive match was in November, representing India in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad, which ended in a loss for India. Despite the outcome, Shami emerged as the tournament's highest wicket-taker, claiming 24 wickets in 7 matches, including three five-wicket hauls.

The BCCI has indicated that Shami might be available for the Bangladesh series starting on September 19, after recovering from an ankle injury.
