In an exceptional Indian Premier League (IPL) season for Gujarat Titans (GT), Shubman Gill managed to cement his place as one of the best young talents in the world. The opener finished with 890 runs this season, becoming the second Indian batter to breach the 800-run barrier after Virat Kohli, who slammed 973 runs back in 2016.
The 23-year-old has had a phenomenal 2023 for India as well, amassing 980 runs with five international centuries, which includes an ODI double-ton against New Zealand in January.
Former India captain Kapil Dev on seeing Gill's breathtaking season, lauded the Punjab-born. As quoted by ABP News, India's first-ever World Cup-winning captain said that Gill needed maturity and another year to be compared to Indian batting greats.
Here's what Dev said
"Sunil Gavaskar came, Sachin Tendulkar came, then Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, and Virat Kohli came, and now, with the kind of batting he is showing, it appears that Shubman Gill is following their footsteps. But I will like to give him another season (before making big claims). He definitely has the talent and ability, but he needs more maturity."
"If he plays another season like this, there is no doubt that he, too, could be included in the list of great players. But I would not like to take him to that league currently. Maybe he needs to give one more year. It's too early (to say)."
Gill will hope to continue his red-hot form for India against Australia as well in the upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2023, which starts June 7 at The Oval.
