'Gold For Country - What's Bigger Than That' - Gill On Cricket's Olympics Return

Indian's young batting sensation Shubman Gill welcomed the return of cricket to the Olympics with open arms and laid bare his dream to bag a gold medal for the country when a showpiece T20 competition is organised during the multi-sport event at the 2028 Los Angeles games.

Cricket's bid for re-inclusion at the Olympics after 128 years was formally accepted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday (October 16), vindicating the sustained efforts made by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for its full-member and associate boards.

With Olympics recognition potentially unlocking unprecedented financial moolah in government and IOC funding for not just cricket's elitist pack but also the sport's struggling lower-ranked teams and emerging sides, the ICC and BCCI have been keen to turn Los Angeles into cricket's comeback ground.

Headed by board president Roger Binny and all-powerful secretary Jay Shah, BCCI apex council backed ICC's Olympics push, which began by formally approving a bid from USA to co-host the men's T20 World Cup 2024 alongside West Indies. Having long identified America as a lucrative, untapped territory, the ICC reckons a T20 World Cup followed by an Olympics T20 tournament could be pathbreaking for the sport in the region.

Shubman Gill Eyeing Olympics Gold Medal For India

The great development has been cheered in all corners of world cricket, with Shah confirming the news to Indian fans and underlining it as a momentous occasion for the global sport.

"This reinstatement not only celebrates the rich heritage of cricket but also opens up new horizons for the game on the global stage," Shah had tweeted.

Shah's tweet was followed by a series of tweets from leading Indian players, who looked forward to representing the nation at the Olympics and affirmed their desire to bag the coveted gold at the biggest sporting event.

Gill joined the bandwagon on Tuesday (October 17) by stating how much he cherishes cricket's Olympics recognition. Exhibiting maturity beyond his years, the 24-year-old said there would be no bigger honour than winning the gold medal for the nation.

"It’s a dream come true for every cricketer to play in the Olympics. It will be extremely difficult, but I have faith that we can succeed. We all feel really thrilled about it since we have a highly talented team," Gill said in an interview with Star Sports.

"Getting gold for the country – what’s bigger than that? Really happy for cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics," he added.
