Shreyas Iyer, India’s batting dynamo, has never been one to shy away from the spotlight. But in a recent video titled ‘Defining Success’ on the BCCI website, the 29-year-old cranked up the self-appreciation dial to a level that oscillated between admiration and second-hand embarrassment.
Ahead of India’s first ODI against England on Thursday, Iyer declared, “For me, the champion is me,” doubling down on a mantra that walks the fine line between unshakable confidence and peak overconfidence.
Iyer's Confident Self-Appreciation
In the BCCI feature, Iyer, fresh off a stellar Ranji and Vijay Hazare Trophy season served a platter of quotes that can unsettle even the greats of the game.
“For me, the champion is me. It is all in the mind. I personally feel there is no one to support you other than yourself. You keep elevating yourself and improving yourself over another. And you never cry over spilled milk,” Iyer said.
While athletes often credit “the team” or “the process,” Iyer’s self-anointed champion tag sounded a bit awry. Nevertheless, Shreyas Iyer then shared that he is approaching upcoming challenges, including the Champions Trophy 2025, with a strong sense of self-belief. He emphasizes the importance of a positive mindset.
"I never underestimate myself. I see to it that I don't have realistic thoughts. Because whenever I have realistic thoughts I feel I am doubting my abilities and you are limiting yourself to excel."
Iyer's focus is firmly on contributing to Team India's success, and he views upcoming opportunities, starting with the England ODIs, as chances to demonstrate his abilities. He expressed immense pride in wearing the Indian jersey.
"It gives me chills every time when I wear Team India's Jersey. The logo and Indian flag on the Jersey and Helmets, it's a very proud moment for me. I would absolutely play the game with full energy and give my best every time."
Shreyas Iyer later, also acknowledged the importance of humility, as reflected in his statement where he asks to be grateful for the success.
"The more you achieve, the more you get success. It is important to be down to earth and showing gratifying gesture to everyone," Iyer remarked.
Iyer's primary focus remains on maximizing his potential and helping India achieve its goals. He's determined to "elevate himself" and contribute meaningfully to the team's performance.
Iyer Eyes National Comeback
To be fair, Iyer’s ODI numbers do command respect. He bagged 2421 runs in just 57 innings and also has 5 centuries to his name. Yet his last ODI encounter against Sri Lanka in the national jersey was nothing to be remembered.
Now, with the Champions Trophy 2025 looming, Iyer’s self-proclaimed 'champion' narrative feels like a high-stakes gamble. Iyer’s comeback trail starts with the England ODIs, where he’ll need to back his bravado with runs. Team India’s middle order remains a puzzle, and his ability to tackle short-pitched bowling will be under scrutiny.
