'England Clearly Like Losing': Michael Vaughan Looses Cool After Harry Brook's Dismissal on Day 3

England squandered their overnight score by losing their final six wickets for just 46 runs on Day 3. Despite losing wickets in succession, the hosts persisted with their ‘BazBall’ philosophy of scoring quick runs, which ultimately dusted them out for 325 to give Australia a strong 91-run first innings lead.

Former English captain and Ashes winner Michael Vaughan launched a scathing attack on the Ben Stokes-led side, and singled out Harry Brook for his unwanted dismissal to Mitchell Starc. The 24-year-old batter, after racing to his 50, swatted away a short ball from Starc only to be holed out at cover to leave his side in further trouble.

Vaughan loses cool at commentary after Brook’s departure

Michael Vaughan was at the commentary box at the time of Harry Brook’s departure from the crease.

The former English captain lost his cool after witnessing the youngster’s shot selection, and claimed that England is on a self-destruction path against Australia. He said:

“England clearly like losing. Seeing a player play a shot like that, it’s just not good enough at this level.”

Vaughan does not seem to be smitten with the team’s ‘BazBall’ philosophy, which has yielded them much Test success over the past one year. The 2005 Ashes-winning captain believes the team is giving away cheap wickets to Australia in their unnecessary pursuit of quick runs.

The cricketer-turned-commentator also criticized current skipper Ben Stokes for his early declaration call in the first Ashes Test of the series. Stokes’ decision eventually backfired as the hosts lost to an insurgent Australia in the final hour of the Edgbaston Test.

In the meantime, England’s 325-run effort handed their guests a strong 91-run lead. Notably, they were placed at a commanding 279-4 at one stage. However, captain Stokes’ dismissal triggered a lower-order collapse, with Brook’s unwanted shot a little while later only worsening the situation for his side.
