'Don't Expect Too Much From Him'- Gautam Gambhir On Jaiswal's First Test Tour Of SA

Gautam Gambhir believes young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal shouldn't be overburdened with expectations and responsibility for Team India to succeed during the marquee two-match Test series in South Africa.

The former India opener, who was one of the heroes of a memorable 1-1 drawn Test series in the rainbow nation back in 2010-11, insisted the conditions in Proteas' land could border on the extreme in terms of challenge for the inexperienced Mumbai left-hander.

Jaiswal made an imposing start to his Test career in July during the series in the Caribbean against the West Indies.

However, the 21-year-old will be on his first tour of South Africa and face a challenge two notches higher in the form of conditions and the robust home team pace battery.

Gambhir On Jaiswal's South Africa Tryst

Speaking to Star Sports, Gambhir underlined the quality of the current South Africa Test match attack and said it would be unfair on Jaiswal to be the one to bear too many expectations from fans and even the team management and the selectors.

Gambhir said he does believe Jaiswal has the technique and the range to succeed everywhere and forge a long Test career for India. However, he refrained from putting extra hopes on the cricketer's very young shoulders.

"Extremely different challenge, pace attack and situations because the West Indies have subcontinental-type wickets. Here, when you will play Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi or Nandre Burger, there will be bounce," he said.

"Yashasvi Jaiswal has the game, both front and back foot, but it will be a very different challenge. I believe he will get better with this experience. Don't expect too much, that a young player will come and score a century or a double century in the first match," Gambhir added.

The two-Test series against South Africa starts with the Boxing Day Test in Centurion on December 26 before the two teams move to Cape Town for the New Year's Test on January 3.
