'Determination To Get Dhoni Was...,' CSK's Mindset During Historical First IPL Auction Revealed

CSK and MS Dhoni have been together for 17 years now, and it is just hard to imagine CSK without Mahendra Singh Dhoni, their charismatic skipper till IPL 2023, with five five trophies to his name. 

The story of his association with CSK in the inaugural edition is also an interesting one, when CSK went all out to buy the then Indian skipper MS Dhoni, and he went for 9.5 Crore. 

Now, Richard Madley, the legendary auctioneer who was at the heart of the auction in the first edition has also revealed that Chennai Super Kings came into IPL 2008 with a clear vision of buying MS Dhoni in an interview with Arvind Krishnan.

"Chennai had come to the auction in 2008 to buy Dhoni. They were going to buy him whatever happens. The determination of Chennai to get Dhoni was clear."

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were the only two franchises in the inaugural editions who were without 'Icon Players' and so MS Dhoni was naturally their best option. Rajasthan Royals, on the other hand went for Shane Warne and the association of both these players with their respective franchises will go down as one of the most memorable stories in the history of the IPL.
