Indian batter Virat Kohli's dramatic century during India's victory over Bangladesh in the ICC World Cup 2023 clash has attracted both praise and criticism.

However, cricket legend and former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram stepped forward to commend the Indian skipper's approach and impeccable fitness levels.

Chasing a target of 257, India looked comfortably in the lead, needing just 19 runs from 66 balls. Kohli, needing the same amount of runs to reach his century, took an audacious approach by forgoing singles and opting for boundaries instead. His decision was questioned by some on social media, who believed he was putting personal milestones above the team's needs.

Akram, during his appearance on 'The Pavilion' show on Pakistan news channel A Sports, highlighted Kohli's remarkable fitness levels, drawing attention to the fact that the Indian stalwart had fielded for the entire duration of Bangladesh's innings. He added that the Indian team was winning without any problems so there was no harm in completing the ton.

The legendary pacer mentioned that even in the game's latter stages, Kohli's agility was on display as he effortlessly ran two consecutive twos. The Pakistan veteran subtly implied that for a player of Kohli's stature and form, reaching a century was only a matter of time.

“He fielded for the first 50 overs, and then, in the 90th over of the match, he took back-to-back twos. That shows his fitness, that shows that this guy is from another planet. They were winning pretty easily, century ho rahi hai toh hone do (If the batter has a chance to reach his century, let him be). They were toying with the bowlers, they were enjoying the batting. When Kohli came to bat, and the start that he had, it was only a matter of time,” said Akram.

Kohli will be back in action on Sunday as India takes on New Zealand in a top of the table clash at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
