Day 1 of the Leeds Test between England and Australia saw Mark Wood rattle the latter with sheer pace. Wood, who is making his first match in the ongoing Ashes 2023 series, claimed figures of 5 for 34, displaying a devastating spell, which helped England bundle Australia out for 263.

In reply, England, too, finds themselves on the backfoot by stumps, reeling on 68 for 3, trailing Australia by 195 runs, with Joe Root and Jonathan Bairstow in the middle.

Wood, who shone on Day 1, expressed his pleasure over his performance on return after being made to sit out for the Edgbaston and Lord's Test.

Here's what Wood said

"I haven't played a Test match in a while, but to be able to come back thoroughly fresh and produce that was pretty special. I was really happy that I could show that on home conditions, I can bowl as well. Amazing! Great feeling to get five wickets, first time in front of my Mom and Dad. So, that was a lovely moment to see them in the stand. The team is in a good position."

Out of 19 Tests for England, the 33-year-old has played 14 at home and 15 in overseas conditions, claiming 95 wickets.

Interestingly, this was Wood's second Test at Headingley after 2015 (vs New Zealand)

Wood further praised centurion Mitchell Marsh for his 100, which kept the Australian innings moving forward.
