"Aggressive Approach" Daniel Vettori Reveals The 'Real Reason' Why SRH Failed To Qualify

Sunrisers Hyderabad's IPL 2025 campaign came to a premature end on Monday after their must-win match against Delhi Capitals (DC) was washed out due to persistent rain. With only three wins in 11 matches, SRH’s playoff hopes mathematically ended.

After the match head coach Daniel Vettori reflected on a season marred by inconsistency and unexpected playing conditions.

Vettori Cites Tricky Home Conditions As Main Reason For SRH's Downfall

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Vettori was candid about the challenges the team faced throughout the season. One of the key issues, he pointed out, was the unpredictable nature of the surfaces at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

"I definitely did not say after every match I was backing an aggressive approach. I said we are about assessing conditions and this year, the conditions weren't as we expected. If you look at last year, there were a lot of high-scoring games here.

The franchise, which had adopted a fearless, attacking brand of cricket in IPL 2024, struggled to replicate that success in vastly different conditions this year.

"These surfaces in particular have been a little bit different. It has been tricky, it has not been easy for the batters. All we have talked about is assessing conditions, trying to read the game, and understand what to do in certain situations. I think the guys are innately aggressive, but certainly, this season has been about trying to establish what's been required on the day," he added.

Head Coach Highlights Shift In Pitch Behaviour

Hyderabad hosted six matches this season, but only four out of 11 innings saw teams crossing the 200-run mark. That was a stark contrast to IPL 2024, where seven out of 12 innings in Hyderabad breached the 200-run barrier.

Vettori noted that while two pitches still offered scores above 250, the majority were bowler-friendly particularly favouring fast bowlers early on.

"There have been two surfaces that have been 250-plus, and there have been four here that have been probably more conducive for the fast bowlers. Not so much the spinners but the new ball has been a little bit sticky, hard to hit, not coming onto the bat. The IPL has some of the best new-ball bowlers in the world, and they were able to exploit those conditions," he said.

"Obviously, it is disappointing. We came in with high hopes, but we have not been consistent enough with our performances. I have spoken to you guys a number of times around just not being able to put complete performances together. Today was the start of a complete performance, so it is frustrating that we could not finish it, but that is cricket," he added.

SRH vs DC: Quick Match Summary

The rain-interrupted match against DC seemed like a rare opportunity for SRH to deliver a complete performance. Captain Pat Cummins, leading from the front, delivered an incisive opening spell, finishing with figures of 3/19.

DC was reduced to a precarious 29/5 before recovering to 133/7, thanks to middle-order efforts from Tristan Stubbs (41* off 36) and Ashutosh Sharma (41 off 26).

However, the rain arrived just after the first innings ended, forcing the game to be abandoned. With the points shared in the washout, Delhi Capitals moved to fifth on the table with 13 points SRH, on the other hand, remain eighth with seven points from 11 matches.
