India announced their squad for the ODI tour of Australia on October 4, marking some major changes and a massive step involving ex-India captain Rohit Sharma. Yes, Rohit Sharma has been removed from captaincy for the ODI tour, with Shubman Gill stepping up to take the helm.

This move surprised fans and Indian cricket experts alike, as Rohit had been leading India only in ODIs since Gill took over the Test team and Suryakumar Yadav continued as the T20I captain.

Rohit, who holds a glorious captaincy record for the Men in Blue, will no longer be at the top to lead the Indian side. This decision also raises questions about his participation in the 2027 World Cup and his long-standing dream of lifting the ODI trophy, which India narrowly missed under his captaincy back in 2023.

Rohit Sharma unveils longing for the World Cup

Amidst the development, an old video resurfaced from four months ago, highlighting Rohit Sharma’s deep desire to win the World Cup for India.

In an interview with cricket journalist Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel, which boasts over 681K subscribers, Rohit Sharma shared a candid and heartfelt reaction when asked if he plans to play and lead in the 2027 World Cup to finish the unfinished business of 2023. Rohit, with a deep sigh, said it was definitely his wish to play and win the 2027 World Cup.

"Ji Bilkul hai zehen mai. Accha rahega agar aisa hua ki 2023 mei jo fulfll nahi hua use fulfill kar paya toh. (It is definitely in my scheme of things to play and win the World Cup in 2027. It will be great if we manage to win the tournament)" Rohit said in the podcast.

For the unreserved, the 2023 World Cup was a massive heartbreak for Indian fans as Travis Head became the destroyer from the Australian side to script a 6-wicket win while chasing a 241-run target. Though after 4 years, in 2027, the dream will live on for India to lift the cup, one of the finest captains of India, Rohit Sharma, will no longer be at the helm.
