India captain Rohit Sharma broke several records when the star opener took centre stage against Afghanistan last evening in Delhi at Arun Jaitley Stadium during an ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 encounter.

Chasing 273, Sharma launched an attack on Afghanistan bowlers on the batting track, where hitting sixes became a fashion. Sharma (556), known as 'Hit-Man', went on to surpass former West Indies captain Chris Gayle's tally of 553 international sixes as well during his record-breaking 131-run knock.

While Gayle achieved this feat in 551 innings, Sharma registered this record in just 473 innings. Gayle, who enjoys a wonderful relationship with Sharma off the field as well, took to the social media platform 'X', and congratulated the latter for going past the former's record tally.

The former hard-hitting opener shared a photo with Sharma, with both wearing their respective 45-number national jersey captioned, "Congrats, Most Sixes in International cricket. #45 Special."

Apart from Sharma and Gayle, no other cricketer has slammed more than 500+ sixes in international cricket.

Pakistan's Shahid Afridi, New Zealand's Brendon McCullum, and Martin Guptill have slammed 476, 398, and 383 maximums, respectively.

In ODIs, however, Sharma (298) is ranked third on the list of most sixes, Afridi leads with 351, followed by Gayle with 331. Amongst other active players, England's white-ball skipper Jos Buttler sits in 12th position with 165, and former India captain Virat Kohli on 19th place with 142.
