The much-awaited third Test between India and Australia started on a dull note, with rain playing spoilsport for the majority of the first day. Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first to capitalise on the venue's seam-friendly conditions. However, the Australian openers' dodged resistance frustrated the visitors, with India not being able to pick up a single wicket.

However, as soon as Akash Deep started challenging the Aussie duo with immaculate accuracy, rain intervened in the proceedings at The Gabba. Interestingly, the weather forecast for all five days of this Test match doesn't look promising, and there's a huge probability that this Test will end without a result.

The third Test holds significant importance from India's perspective, as the visitors are on the verge of a WTC elimination following four defeats in their last five Tests. What if the Gabba Test ends in a draw?

Will India Be Out Of WTC Final Race If Rain Forces A Drawn Test At The Gabba?

Currently, India occupy the third position in the WTC points table with a PCT of 57.29. They have three Tests left in the cycle, including the ongoing game at The Gabba. So, considering Australia will face Sri Lanka in a two-match series, India are in a do-or-die situation and need to win this game to keep their WTC final hopes alive.

However, if rain plays spoilsport at The Gabba, India and Australia will receive four points each. This will further reduce India's PCT to 55.88, although they will retain the third position in the standings.

On the other hand, Australia's PCT will read 58.89, slightly more than what India would like at this stage. Meanwhile, South Africa will remain at the top of the pile with a PCT of 63.33. Thus, a drawn affair in Brisbane will dent India's WTC final hopes, making things smooth for Australia and South Africa, as they will get two extra matches than Rohit Sharma and co to boost their chances.
