The T20 World Cup, known for its electrifying atmosphere and high-intensity gameplay, has seen some outstanding performances by unsung heroes i.e the wicket-keepers.

These players not only contribute with the bat but also play a crucial role behind the stumps, producing dismissals that often turn the course of the game.

Since the MS Dhoni era, the importance of keepers in the shortest format has increased significantly. While Dhoni raised the bar high with his quick reflexes, many equally good keepers often get overshadowed due to a lack of hype around their role.

Meanwhile, ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, here is the list of the top five wicket-keepers with the most dismissals in the T20 World Cup’s history.

5. Quinton de Kock (22)

South Africa’s explosive and hard-hitting opener Quinton de Kock ranks fifth in the list with a total of 22 dismissals behind the stumps. De Kock is a seasoned wicket-keeper with years of notable experience in international cricket, especially the T20 format, as he dumped the other two formats to transform into a T20 specialist.

He played a total of 18 games in the ICC event, and the dismissal included 17 catches and 5 stumpings. He is also the one with the least number of games played in the top 5 list.

4. Kumar Sangakkara (26)

Sri Lankan legendary wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara also featured in the list of the most dismissals by a wicket-keeper in the T20 World Cup, with 26 dismissals in 31 games. Sangakkara clubbed 12 catches and attained 14 stumpings with his quick reflexes.

Sangakkara has always been a linchpin of Sri Lanka’s top order. However, his keeping skills were equally impressive as he made a difference for his side in the ICC event. While Sangakkara retired almost a decade ago, his records and legacy are still unmatched in the shortest format.

3. Denesh Ramdin (27)

Ex-reliable wicket-keeper from the West Indies, Denesh Ramdin ranks third in the list as he recorded 27 dismissals (18 catches and 9 stumpings) in T20 World Cups. Ramdin was not a very popular face in the Windes squad.

However, his contributions as a hitter as well as a wicket-keeper were profound. West Indies has always been a dominant side in the T20 World Cup, and Ramdin happened to be a key part of that squad that achieved glory many years back. It’s safe to say his agility and acrobatics behind the stumps have often been game-changing for his team.

2. Kamran Akmal (30)

Pakistani veteran Kamran Akmal is the wicket-keeper with the second most dismissals in T20 World Cups. In 30 appearances in the ICC event, he grabbed 12 catches and successfully attempted 18 stumpings, which amounted to a total of 30 dismissals.

Despite his gaffs in the field, Akmal was one of the finest wicket-keepers for his side in his prime days. Notably, Kamran Akmal was also a part of the Pakistan squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2009 by beating Sri Lanka in the finals held in London. He played a crucial knock of 37 (28) as an opener.

1. MS Dhoni (32)

Widely renowned as one of the greatest wicket-keepers in cricket’s history, the former Indian successful captain, MS Dhoni is stationed at the top of the list with as many as 32 dismissals as a keeper in T20 World Cup. Dhoni featured in the inaugural season in 2007 and led his side to a title victory. As years passed by, Dhoni turned into a vital part of the Indian side not only as a captain but also a wicket-keeper.

His unreal reflex and sharp presence of mind helped Dhoni attain 32 dismissals in the T20 World Cup, which includes 21 catches and 11 stumpings across 33 appearances. Dhoni revolutionise wicket-keeping standards, and even after several years post-retirement, he remains at the top of every wicket-keeping chart.
