The mother of all cricketing events, World Cup 2023, has commenced in the country where the sport is treated as a religion, India. It's been just a couple of days since the tournament took off and the records are being broken already. 

In the ongoing game between South Africa and Sri Lanka, the Proteas have smashed the highest total in the ODI World Cup history and broke the record of Australia's 417 against Afghanistan at the 2015 World Cup. Also, the South African team now have three of the top five totals in the World Cup history.

The Proteas are playing their opening game of the 2023 World Cup against the Sri Lankans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. The Lankans asked the Africans to bat first; in return, they posted a mammoth total of 428. The surface seemed like a batting paradise with comparitively shorter boundaries and the Africans made the most out of these conditions. 

Not one, not a couple, but three centuries were scored in the South African innings today. Quinton De Kock, Rassie Van Der Dussen, and Aiden Markram, all three of them scored tons and helped the South African team in scripting history by smashing the highest total in The ODI World Cup.

Australia' 417/6 vs Afghanistan

Back in 2015, when Australia was one of the co-hosts of the World Cup, they smashed the highest total ever in the ODI World Cup history which got broken today after eight years by the Proteas. Australia smashed 417 against the Afghanistan team at the Optus Stadium, Perth. 

The Australian opener, David Warner played a blistering knock of 178 runs and registered his second highest scored in the ODIs. Along with Warner, Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell chipped in with 95 and 88 runs respectively and took Australia's total to 417, which is the second highest total now in the ODI World Cup history. 


India's 413/5 vs Bermuda

India may not have had the best time at the 2007 World Cup, but they smashed one of the highest totals in the ODI World Cup history against Bermuda. There were too many rotations in the batting order as Sachin was aked to play in the middle order and Sehwag was coming at number three. 

Virender Sehwag, who came in at number three smashed a blistering ton along with the half-centuries from Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh. With the contributions from these four batters, India scripted history recording one of the highest totals. 

South Africa's 411/4 vs Ireland

The South African team was on an another level in the 2015 World Cup as they managed to reach the semifinal as well. In their game against Ireland, the Proteas smashed 411 runs and created one of the record breaking scores in the World Cup history. 

The South-African opener, Hashim Amla smashed 159, and the former captain of team, Faf Du Plessis also scored a ton. Along with these tons, David Miller's 46* off 23 and Rilee Rossouw's 61 off just 30 helped South Africa reach 411 at Canberra.

South Africa's 408/5 vs West Indies

This was an another highest total of the World Cup, which came in 2015 World Cup only. This was against the mighty Caribbeans at the Sydney Cricket Ground. This time it was none other the Mr. 360 who smashed a ton helping the Proteas reach a humongous score of 408. 

Apart from AB De Villiers 162 off just 66 deliveries, thre half-centuries were scored by Faf Du Plessis, Rilee Rossouw and Hashim Amla, which took South Africa's score to 408 and helped them register a win by 257 runs.
